NW BTU HS Co-ord Urges USR Involvement In Workplace Temperature Review

The North West Bt Unions Health & Safety Co-ord has circulated the following to all NW CWU Telecomm Branches and urges all Union Safety Reps and not just those in the CWU, to fill in the questionaire by 11th February.

CWU HQ's Steve Mann, has written to all H&S Co-ords reminding them that both the TUC and the CWU have been campaigning for a maximum temperature in the workplace. The HSE board are looking at this and they are currently gathering “evidence”.

Tracy Buckley, secretary of the NW BTU H&S Co-ord has circulated to all co-ord members, the associated questionaire which can be downloaded from this website here

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) have instigated a review of measures for ensuring health and safety at work in relation to maximum workplace temperature.

An interim study was undertaken, and report produced, the findings of which were considered by the HSE Board. The Board have concluded that more evidence is required to identify those sectors where thermal environment was an issue and to scope the full extent of the problems presented.

It is anticipated that evaluation of data collated from responses to this questionnaire will enable HSE to determine whether problems caused by thermal environments are specific to certain sectors or whether they affect all areas of industry. In addition it is hoped that responses to this questionnaire will assist us in identifying practical and effective steps that can be taken to tackle this issue in key workplaces.

It is important for us to gather evidence to assess the full scale of the problem and we would therefore appreciate everybody returning their form, even if you have answered ‘no – high workplace temperatures are not a concern to your company’.

To help us make the most of this data we would appreciate your sharing as much information as you think is relevant, and are quite happy for you to add to your questionnaire via email or by telephone.

Providing your full contact details with your form gives us the opportunity to contact you to find out more for the purposes of this study only, particularly if you have successfully overcome a problem that others are still experiencing.  In return, please do feel free to contact us to discuss any concerns that you may have or to simply give us your answers over the telephone.

Please could you return your completed questionnaire to Helen Rowlands by cop on Thursday 11th February.

Contact Helen Rowlands on 0151 951 4517, Helen.rowlands@hse.gsi.gov.uk or HSE, Redgrave Court, Merton Road, Bootle, Liverpool, L20 7HS.  In Helen’s absence you may also contact Kate Haire on 0151 951 3792.
